OSCAR PIASTRI PROMOTED AS LANDO NORRIS HAS LAP DELETED AFTER UNITED STATES F1 GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING

Oscar Piastri will start the United States Grand Prix from seventh on the grid after team-mate Lando Norris had his final qualifying lap deleted for exceeding track limits. The penalty reversed the McLaren order in the closing moments of Q3 and handed Piastri a rare head-to-head qualifying victory over the reigning world champion.

Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli continued his charge toward the 2026 title by securing pole position at the Circuit of the Americas.

### TRACK LIMITS DECIDE THE MCLAREN BATTLE

Norris had looked set for sixth on the grid before stewards deleted his last flying lap. The decision dropped him to eighth and elevated Piastri one place. It marked only the eighth time this season that Piastri has out-qualified his team-mate across 24 sessions, underlining how competitive the internal McLaren contest has been.

Piastri has started seventh on nine occasions already in 2026. While not the ideal position, it keeps him in the upper half of the field and within reach of points, particularly at a circuit where race-day variables often play a significant role.

### ANTONELLI TAKES POLE IN CHAMPIONSHIP STATEMENT

Antonelli delivered a controlled lap of 1:34.035 to claim his seventh pole of the season and his first in eight races. The Mercedes driver finished 0.179 seconds clear of Max Verstappen, with Isack Hadjar completing an impressive Red Bull second-row lockout in third — a career-best qualifying result for the Frenchman.

Charles Leclerc qualified fourth for Ferrari, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in fifth and George Russell in sixth. The session took place in hot and cloudy conditions, with drivers acutely aware of the track-limits sensitivity after more than 200 deletions across Friday’s practice sessions.

### CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEXT HEIGHTENS THE STAKES

Antonelli holds a 102-point lead over Russell heading into the race. A victory on Sunday, combined with limited scores from his closest rivals, would put him in a position to seal the drivers’ championship with races to spare. The 20-year-old remains on course to become Formula 1’s youngest world champion and Italy’s first since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

“We got pole so we’ll try to win tomorrow,” Antonelli said. “Max has been very quick and did an incredible job in qualifying so it’s not going to be easy. Hopefully, we’ll be leading into Turn One and we’ll try to set the pace.”

Verstappen, seeking a fifth win at the circuit, admitted his Q3 runs lacked balance despite strong earlier sessions.

### WHAT IT MEANS FOR SUNDAY

The McLaren pair will start seventh and eighth, giving both drivers opportunities to progress if the race delivers safety cars or strategic variation. For Piastri, the qualifying result provides a small psychological edge after a season in which Norris has more often held the upper hand in one-lap pace.

At the front, Antonelli’s pole places him in control of his own destiny. Verstappen and Hadjar form a potent Red Bull threat, while Ferrari’s fourth and fifth places keep both cars in contention despite another qualifying session that failed to match their practice form.

Track limits have already shaped the grid. On Sunday they may shape the race as well. For now, Piastri takes the minor victory within McLaren, and Antonelli takes the major one that matters most for the championship.
