Nikita Mazepin has officially returned to competitive motorsport after the lifting of the FIA restrictions that prevented Russian drivers from competing under their national flag. The former Haas Formula 1 driver made his comeback at Spa this weekend, marking a significant new chapter in his racing career.
Mazepin, who raced for Haas during the 2021 Formula 1 season alongside Mick Schumacher, was forced out of the sport after just one campaign. His departure came shortly after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, which led the FIA to introduce restrictions on Russian and Belarusian competitors. Haas subsequently terminated its relationship with Mazepin and major sponsor Uralkali ahead of the 2022 season.
FIA LIFTS RESTRICTIONS ON RUSSIAN DRIVERS
The situation changed in August 2026 when the FIA World Motor Sport Council announced that its emergency measures concerning Russian and Belarusian competitors had been revised.
Under the updated position, drivers from both countries are once again permitted to participate in international and zone competitions without the previous restrictions. They are also allowed to display their national colours, flags and symbols, while the requirement to sign a neutrality commitment has been removed.
The decision opened the door for Mazepin to return to international competition under the Russian flag.
His comeback has immediately attracted attention because he became one of the first Russian drivers to compete internationally following the lifting of the restrictions.
MAZEPIN MAKES INSTANT IMPACT AT SPA
Mazepin is competing in the Spezial Tourenwagen Trophy at Spa, making his GT3 debut with Team Motopark behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG.
Rather than needing time to rediscover his confidence, the former F1 driver produced an eye-catching performance almost immediately.
Mazepin secured pole position in the opening qualifying session, reportedly beating the driver in second place by more than four seconds.
The result is particularly notable because his experience with the team had previously been limited to testing at Spa and the Lausitzring. His return therefore represents more than simply a ceremonial comeback — he has already shown genuine pace.
A VERY DIFFERENT CAREER AFTER FORMULA 1
Mazepin’s competitive career did not completely disappear after his departure from Formula 1.
He participated in endurance racing, including the Asian Le Mans Series during the 2023 and 2023/24 campaigns. He also gained GT experience by competing in the 24 Hours of Dubai with Rossa LM GT.
Those experiences have given Mazepin additional exposure to different machinery and racing formats, potentially helping him develop skills that were difficult to demonstrate during his single F1 campaign.
His latest GT3 opportunity now gives him a fresh platform to rebuild his reputation in international motorsport.
MAZEPIN’S F1 SEASON REMAINS A COMPLICATED STORY
Mazepin’s only Formula 1 season produced zero championship points, with a best finish of 14th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. On paper, those numbers make his 2021 campaign look disappointing.
However, the circumstances surrounding that season provide important context.
Haas was struggling financially and had one of the least competitive cars on the grid following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Neither Mazepin nor Schumacher scored a championship point that year, while Schumacher’s best result was only 12th.
Mazepin nevertheless finished behind his teammate in the general perception of their performances, and his F1 opportunity disappeared after only one season.
CAN MAZEPIN REBUILD HIS MOTORSPORT CAREER?
His impressive qualifying performance at Spa provides an encouraging starting point, but one session will not determine whether Mazepin can successfully rebuild his career.
GT3 racing presents a very different challenge from Formula 1, with different car characteristics, race formats, tyre behaviour and competition. Consistency over an entire race weekend will ultimately matter far more than a single qualifying result.
Nevertheless, Mazepin now has something he did not have for several years: a genuine opportunity to compete internationally without the restrictions that previously prevented him from doing so.
His return will inevitably attract debate because of his controversial exit from Formula 1 and the circumstances surrounding the FIA’s previous restrictions. But on the track, Mazepin has wasted little time reminding observers that he still possesses considerable speed.
Whether this becomes a one-off appearance or the beginning of a sustained return to top-level motorsport will depend on what he does next. For now, however, Nikita Mazepin is back — and his first competitive session has already delivered a very loud statement.
