Esteban Ocon’s Formula 1 future is facing its biggest uncertainty yet, with reports suggesting the Frenchman could leave the championship at the end of the 2026 season and pursue a move into the World Endurance Championship with Toyota in 2027. Ocon has already confirmed that he is a free agent for next season, admitting that discussions about his future are taking place behind the scenes. However, he has also previously insisted that his focus remained on finding a way to continue racing in Formula 1.
The situation at Haas has nevertheless become increasingly difficult for the experienced driver. The American team has been evaluating several candidates for its second 2027 seat, with Ferrari-backed Rafael Câmara emerging as the reported frontrunner. Multiple reports indicate that Câmara has impressed during testing and is now ahead of other contenders, although Haas has stressed that its final decision had not yet been made.
If Câmara does secure the seat alongside Oliver Bearman, it would represent a major change in direction for Haas and potentially bring Ocon’s decade-long Formula 1 career to an end. Ocon has made almost 200 Grand Prix starts, claimed his maiden and only F1 victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix and added three further podium finishes. He joined Haas after leaving Alpine and delivered points-scoring performances during his first season with the team, but his 2026 campaign has proved considerably more challenging.
A move to Toyota’s WEC programme would nevertheless give Ocon an opportunity to begin an entirely different chapter in top-level motorsport. Endurance racing would require him to adapt to longer races, multi-class traffic, shared driving duties and a different approach to strategy and car management. Toyota already has an established presence in the Hypercar category, although recent reports have focused primarily on the possibility of Ryo Hirakawa leaving its WEC line-up for an F1 opportunity, meaning any future Ocon-Toyota link should be treated as a developing report rather than an officially confirmed deal.
For now, Ocon’s immediate priority remains the remainder of his 2026 campaign, while Haas prepares to finalize its 2027 line-up. Team principal Ayao Komatsu has said the decision is expected within weeks, leaving the Frenchman with limited time to influence the situation or secure another opportunity in Formula 1. If the reported Toyota switch ultimately materializes, Ocon would leave F1 with a substantial body of experience behind him and begin a new challenge in endurance racing—potentially turning the end of his Haas chapter into the beginning of something completely different.
