Esteban Ocon has received a timely boost in his search for a 2027 Formula 1 seat after it emerged that Cadillac team principal Marcin Budkowski rates the Frenchman very highly. With his exit from Haas already confirmed, the 30-year-old’s best remaining hope of staying on the grid may lie with the new American team as it reassesses its underperforming driver line-up.
The development adds a fresh twist to a driver market that has left Ocon with rapidly dwindling options.
### HAAS EXIT LEAVES OCON SEARCHING FOR A LIFELINE
Ocon’s two seasons at Haas have failed to convince the team to retain him. In 2025 he scored 38 points and finished behind then-rookie Oliver Bearman. The pattern has continued in 2026, with the Frenchman collecting just seven points and sitting 16th in the championship while Bearman has again proved the stronger of the pair.
Haas is widely expected to promote Ferrari junior Rafael Camara for 2027, leaving Ocon without a confirmed race seat. At this stage of the season, most teams have already locked in their line-ups, making any remaining opportunities extremely limited.
### CADILLAC’S STRUGGLES OPEN A POSSIBLE DOOR
Cadillac’s debut campaign has been difficult. Neither Valtteri Bottas nor Sergio Perez has finished higher than 13th, and both drivers will be in their late thirties next year. Reports have suggested the team is considering changes to its driver pairing as it looks to inject fresh performance and longer-term potential.
Into that uncertainty steps Ocon’s existing relationship with Budkowski. The pair worked together during Budkowski’s time as executive director at Renault and Alpine between 2017 and 2022. That prior connection is understood to be the foundation of the high regard in which the Cadillac principal holds the Frenchman.
### EXPERIENCE VERSUS THE YOUTH TREND
Ocon’s case rests on proven race-craft, endurance and the ability to extract results from difficult machinery — qualities a new team building its identity might value. At the same time, Formula 1’s current trend heavily favours young, high-upside talent. Cadillac must decide whether short-term stability and experience outweigh the appeal of a longer-term project driver.
Any move would also carry financial and sporting implications. Releasing contracted drivers mid-project is rarely straightforward, and Cadillac will weigh the cost of change against the potential performance gain.
### MERCEDES RESERVE ROLE REMAINS A FALLBACK
If a full-time race seat does not materialise, Ocon could return to a Mercedes reserve role. He has historical ties to the manufacturer’s junior programme and previously served as their reserve driver. While that option would keep him in the paddock, it would represent a clear step back from regular racing mileage.
For a driver still motivated to compete every weekend, the preference is clear: a race seat remains the priority.
### THE WEEKS AHEAD WILL BE DECISIVE
Ocon has continued to race with visible determination, even while acknowledging performance differences between his car and Bearman’s. His public comments suggest he is not ready to accept the end of his time on the grid.
Whether Budkowski’s admiration translates into a concrete offer will become clearer in the coming weeks. For now, the Frenchman has at least one senior figure inside a Formula 1 team who knows his quality and may be prepared to act on it. In a shrinking market, that single relationship could prove the difference between staying in Formula 1 and watching from the sidelines in 2027.
