Fernando Alonso has launched a strong criticism of modern Formula 1 following a disappointing qualifying session at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver questioned whether the sport has become too dependent on hybrid technology, arguing that battery performance can sometimes overshadow the abilities of the driver behind the wheel.
The Spaniard’s comments touch on a long-running debate about the direction of Formula 1. Today’s drivers must manage an extraordinary amount of technology, including energy deployment, battery usage, tyres and complex power-unit settings. While Alonso recognises the technical achievement involved, he believes the balance has shifted too far away from pure driving ability.
Having competed across several generations of Formula 1 machinery, Alonso has experienced first-hand how dramatically the sport has evolved. His criticism therefore carries particular weight. The two-time world champion believes urgent changes may be necessary if F1 wants to ensure that driver skill remains one of the defining factors in determining performance.
His frustration is also understandable given Aston Martin’s struggles. Another difficult qualifying session leaves Alonso fighting for positions rather than regularly challenging at the front, making the technological imbalance he describes even more noticeable from his perspective.
Alonso’s comments are unlikely to end the argument. Supporters of modern F1 can point to the extraordinary engineering behind the current power units, while critics will agree that drivers should have a greater influence on the outcome. Either way, the veteran’s blunt assessment has reopened a controversial question: has Formula 1 become too complicated, or has technological innovation simply become an unavoidable part of elite motorsport?
