The 2026 Monaco Grand Prix classification has been changed for a second time, nearly three months after the race, following a ruling that restores Pierre Gasly’s original penalties and dramatically reshuffles the final podium positions.
Gasly originally crossed the finish line in third for Alpine but was later dropped to seventh after receiving two five-second penalties for pit-lane speeding. Alpine successfully appealed those penalties in June, temporarily returning Gasly to the podium. However, McLaren and Red Bull subsequently challenged that decision, arguing that changing the measurement parameters after the race created an unfair sporting situation.

The latest ruling has overturned the appeal decision and reinstated Gasly’s original penalties. That means his Monaco podium has officially disappeared once again, with the Frenchman returning to seventh place.

For Gasly, it is an especially frustrating outcome because Alpine maintained that he never actually exceeded the pit-lane speed limit under the shortest legally available route. The team argued that a 77-centimetre discrepancy in the officially measured pit-lane distance played a decisive role in the original penalties.

The controversy was not simply about Gasly’s individual penalty. McLaren argued that the reversal had wider sporting consequences because Oscar Piastri had lost points after receiving the same type of penalty during the race.
The appeal ultimately centered on consistency. The court found that once competitors had been informed of the parameters governing the pit-lane limit during the Grand Prix weekend, those parameters could not subsequently be altered while reconsidering the result.
That reasoning restores the original competitive order and prevents teams from effectively changing the interpretation of a sporting measurement after the event has already been completed.
ALPINE ACCEPTS THE RULING BUT MAINTAINS ITS DISAGREEMENT
Alpine has made it clear that it remains unhappy with the decision, even though the team has accepted the ruling.
The outcome leaves Gasly without a podium finish in the 2026 season so far. His best official result remains sixth place at the Chinese Grand Prix, making the Monaco reversal particularly painful given that he had appeared to secure a third-place finish on the road.
