Kimi Antonelli has been handed a major blow ahead of his home Italian Grand Prix after Mercedes confirmed that the championship leader will take a significant grid penalty at Monza.
However, I cannot verify a current report that Antonelli has been “found guilty” of a new offence. The confirmed development is that Mercedes will exceed the permitted power-unit allocation, triggering a grid penalty under the FIA regulations.
ANTONELLI’S MONZA PENALTY CONFIRMED
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that Antonelli will incur a penalty of at least 10 grid places at Monza after the team decided to introduce additional power-unit components.
The decision follows technical problems earlier in the season, including the engine failure that forced Antonelli to retire from the Spanish Grand Prix while fighting for valuable championship points.
This means the championship leader could be forced to start close to the back of the grid at one of the most important races of his young career.

Hamilton subsequently criticised Ferrari’s strategy and stressed that every point matters if he is to remain in contention for an eighth world championship.
