Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has rejected Helmut Marko’s doubts about George Russell’s future, insisting the British driver still has what it takes to become a Formula 1 world champion. Wolff’s defence comes as Russell faces the prospect of losing the 2026 championship to his teenage teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, following Mercedes’ impressive run of results this season.
Antonelli strengthened his position at the top of the championship with a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The Italian now needs just two more points to secure his maiden world title, putting him within reach of a remarkable achievement at the Mexico City Grand Prix. For Russell, who entered the campaign with serious championship ambitions, the situation represents a significant change in the balance of power inside Mercedes.
HELMUT MARKO QUESTIONS RUSSELL’S FUTURE TITLE CHANCES
Former Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko believes Russell’s position within Mercedes has changed dramatically as Antonelli continues to deliver outstanding performances. Marko suggested that the young Italian has taken the leading role within the team and questioned whether Russell would receive another genuine opportunity to fight for the world championship.
“Russell is no longer the number one driver,” Marko said, arguing that Antonelli had clearly taken that position from his teammate. He also expressed doubt about whether Russell would ever receive another opportunity to compete for the title or be treated as a team’s leading driver.
Marko’s assessment reflects the pressure Russell now faces after beginning the season with expectations of challenging for the championship. When a driver enters a campaign believing the opportunity is finally there, watching a teammate emerge as the title favourite can change the narrative surrounding an entire season.
However, the suggestion that Russell’s championship prospects are finished is a much bigger claim than the evidence from one difficult campaign can establish. Formula 1 careers often depend on the competitiveness of the machinery, team circumstances and the opportunities available over several seasons.
TOTO WOLFF DEFENDS GEORGE RUSSELL
Wolff was quick to disagree with Marko when asked about the comments. Although he acknowledged that he respected the former Red Bull adviser’s opinion, the Mercedes chief made it clear that he believes Russell remains capable of winning a world championship.
“Helmut, he’s my Austrian not-so-buddy, but I respect his opinion. But I think he’s wrong on George,” Wolff said, according to Motorsport.com.
Wolff argued that the characteristics of the current Mercedes car may not suit Russell as well as they suit Antonelli. He also acknowledged that the psychological challenge of seeing a young teammate repeatedly close the gap and take control of the championship should not be underestimated.
“I think that at the beginning of the season it’s maybe difficult to cope with a situation where you’re feeling like this is my year to come, and then you have this wunderkind on the other side that starts to really chip away,” Wolff explained.
His comments suggest Mercedes does not view Russell’s current position as evidence that his ability has disappeared. Instead, Wolff believes the circumstances of the season, including the car’s characteristics and Antonelli’s rapid progress, have contributed to the situation.
WHY MERCEDES BELIEVES RUSSELL CAN STILL BECOME WORLD CHAMPION
Wolff also pointed to Russell’s record before the 2026 campaign, highlighting his achievements in junior categories and the experience he has accumulated throughout his racing career.
Russell won the GP3 championship in 2017 and the Formula 2 title in 2018 before establishing himself in Formula 1. Those accomplishments demonstrated his ability to adapt to different machinery, handle championship pressure and deliver results across a full season.
Wolff believes those qualities remain relevant despite Russell’s current difficulties. He stressed that providing the Briton with a competitive car would give him the opportunity to fight for the championship again.
“In a new season, George, if we provide him a quick car, he has absolutely what it takes to win a championship,” Wolff said.
That distinction matters because Formula 1 success is rarely determined by driver ability alone. A driver can perform at a high level and still miss out on the title if the machinery does not consistently deliver the pace needed to compete at the front.
For Mercedes, the challenge will be understanding why Antonelli appears better positioned to take advantage of the current package while ensuring Russell has the tools to challenge again.
KIMI ANTONELLI’S RISE HAS CHANGED THE MERCEDES DYNAMIC
Antonelli’s emergence has become one of the defining stories of the 2026 season. The young Italian has moved from being a highly rated prospect to a driver on the verge of securing the biggest prize in the sport.
His victory in Austin further increased the pressure on Russell, whose championship hopes now depend on a dramatic change in circumstances. With Antonelli needing only two additional points, Mercedes could soon celebrate its new world champion while Russell is left reflecting on a season that began with very different expectations.
The situation also presents a management challenge for Wolff. Mercedes must support Antonelli as he approaches a historic milestone while maintaining Russell’s confidence and ensuring that both drivers remain motivated.
There is a difference between Antonelli becoming the team’s strongest championship contender in the current season and Russell permanently losing his status as a potential title winner. The first is supported by the championship situation; the second remains Marko’s prediction rather than an established fact.
Mercedes will also need to manage the relationship between its drivers carefully. A successful team benefits from internal competition, but the balance can become difficult when one driver is fighting for a world title and the other is trying to recover lost ground.
THE 2027 SEASON COULD BE CRUCIAL FOR RUSSELL
Russell’s next opportunity to answer his critics will depend heavily on Mercedes’ development and the competitive environment heading into the following season. If the team produces a car that better suits his driving style, Wolff believes the Briton can return to championship contention.
That does not guarantee Russell will defeat Antonelli in a future title fight. The Italian’s performances this season suggest he will be a formidable rival, particularly if he continues developing at his current rate. But Russell’s experience could become an important advantage as Mercedes prepares for another campaign.
The coming races will therefore carry significance beyond the championship celebration itself. They will offer further evidence of how Russell responds to the pressure and how Mercedes intends to manage its increasingly competitive driver pairing.
For now, Wolff has made his position clear: he is not ready to write Russell off. Marko sees Antonelli’s rise as a turning point that could permanently change Russell’s career, but the Mercedes boss believes the British driver’s ability and previous achievements remain strong reasons to expect a comeback.
With Antonelli on the verge of becoming world champion, Russell faces a difficult end to the season. Whether this campaign marks the beginning of a long-term shift within Mercedes or simply a setback before another title challenge will become clearer as the team looks towards 2027.
