Toto Wolff believes George Russell still has everything required to become a Formula 1 champion, but Mercedes must find the right way to bring out his full potential. Russell suffered another setback in the championship fight at the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing fifth while team-mate Kimi Antonelli claimed victory and extended his advantage over the Briton to 81 points.
Russell struggled with tyre management throughout the Madrid weekend, which prevented him from challenging for pole and left him starting sixth. Mercedes then committed to a two-stop strategy, putting him onto medium tyres during the Virtual Safety Car before switching him back to hard tyres later in the race. Russell initially questioned the call, although he later accepted that the strategy was unlikely to have made a major difference to his final fifth-place finish.
Wolff pointed to Russell’s late-race pace as evidence that the speed is still there. The Mercedes boss said Russell was able to close rapidly on Charles Leclerc toward the finish, suggesting that both the driver and car have considerable performance that Mercedes needs to unlock. Wolff also highlighted Russell’s impressive junior career, noting that he won every karting championship he entered and captured both Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in his rookie seasons before making the move to Williams.
Despite Russell effectively playing down his championship chances after Madrid, Wolff refused to write him off with nine rounds still remaining. He stressed that Formula 1 can change dramatically through crashes, mechanical failures and other unexpected setbacks, meaning a large points advantage can disappear quickly. For that reason, Mercedes intends to keep focusing on maximizing each weekend rather than becoming distracted by the current championship standings.
Wolff also confirmed that Mercedes has already shifted significant attention toward its 2027 project, with development work having started well before the summer break. However, he insisted that the team’s long-term preparations will continue independently of the current title situation. For Russell, the immediate challenge is to rediscover his strongest form, while Mercedes works to give its driver the confidence and machinery needed to turn his proven ability into consistent championship-winning perfo
rmances.
