VERSTAPPEN CONFIRMS MCLAREN AND MERCEDES TALKS
Max Verstappen has finally confirmed that he held serious discussions with both McLaren and Mercedes before deciding to commit his Formula 1 future to Red Bull.
The four-time world champion ended months of speculation by signing a new contract that will keep him with Red Bull until at least the end of 2030. The decision came despite a difficult 2026 campaign in which Red Bull has struggled to provide Verstappen with a consistent race-winning car.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Verstappen admitted that conversations with rival teams were genuine but ultimately insisted that staying at Red Bull was the right decision for him.

Verstappen explained that he took every conversation seriously but never felt compelled to abandon Red Bull simply because another team could potentially offer a faster car.
He pointed to his long-term relationship with the team and argued that leaving during difficult periods would not fit his character.
The Dutchman could have pursued a move to a rival earlier in his career, particularly during periods when Red Bull was not capable of challenging for championships. Instead, he stayed and eventually became a four-time world champion with the team.
Now, he is choosing the same philosophy again.
MERCEDES AND McLAREN HAD A REAL OPPORTUNITY
The revelation is significant because both Mercedes and McLaren have represented potentially attractive destinations for Verstappen.
Mercedes has emerged as the dominant force in the 2026 championship, with Kimi Antonelli leading the drivers’ standings and George Russell also fighting at the front. McLaren, meanwhile, entered the season as another major contender.
With Verstappen still searching for his first victory of the 2026 season before finally finishing third at Monza, the temptation to move could have been enormous.
Instead, he decided that rebuilding Red Bull was a challenge worth accepting.
VERSTAPPEN REFUSES TO “JUMP OFF THE SHIP”
Perhaps the strongest indication of Verstappen’s mindset came when he compared his situation to being the captain of a ship.
The Dutchman made it clear that he does not believe in abandoning a team as soon as its competitive advantage disappears. After years of Red Bull dominance, the current decline has provided him with a completely different challenge.
For Verstappen, proving he can help rebuild the team may ultimately be more satisfying than simply moving to whichever car is fastest.
That mentality could also explain why he was reportedly comfortable allowing Red Bull to focus on improving the car rather than becoming consumed by contract negotiations.
RED BULL NOW HAS A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY
Verstappen has made his choice. Now Red Bull has to justify it.
A contract through 2030 represents a massive vote of confidence from one of the greatest drivers of his generation. But loyalty has limits in Formula 1, and Verstappen will expect the team to deliver a car capable of fighting for championships.
Red Bull’s own power-unit project and the team’s technical development will therefore become increasingly important. If the organisation successfully rebuilds around Verstappen, his decision could eventually be remembered as one of the defining choices of his career.
If the team continues to struggle, however, the questions surrounding his decision will return quickly.
VERSTAPPEN HAS CHOSEN THE HARDER ROAD
The most striking part of Verstappen’s revelation is not that Mercedes and McLaren wanted to talk to him. Few would be surprised that the world’s leading teams were interested.
It is that Verstappen seriously considered the alternatives and still chose Red Bull.
Rather than chasing the quickest available car, the four-time champion has committed himself to another rebuilding project.
The message to Red Bull is now brutally simple: Verstappen has stayed. The team must give him a reason to believe he made the right choice.
