Wests Tigers Back Charlie Staines Opens Up on Future Amid Contract Uncertainty
July 7, 2025 – Sydney, Australia
Wests Tigers outside back Charlie Staines has addressed growing speculation surrounding his future at the club, as the 2025 NRL season heads into its final stretch and his current contract nears its expiration.
Staines, 24, is off-contract at the end of this season and is yet to receive a formal extension offer from the Tigers, sparking rumours that the speedster may be on the move. The former Penrith Panthers premiership winner has had a mixed run at Concord since joining the Tigers in 2023, with injuries and form fluctuations limiting his ability to cement a regular starting spot.
Speaking to NRL.com after the Tigers’ training session on Monday, Staines admitted the uncertainty has been on his mind but remains committed to finishing the season strongly.
> “Obviously, it’s in the back of your mind when you’re off-contract, but right now I’m just focused on doing my job for the team,” Staines said. “I love this group and the direction we’re heading in, and if I keep playing well, hopefully something works out.”
The Tigers are undergoing a significant roster overhaul, with new head coach Benji Marshall signalling an intent to reshape the squad around a young core. While Staines has shown flashes of brilliance — including a try-double against the Sharks in Round 12 — the club is reportedly weighing up other backline options, including rising stars from the NSW Cup side.
Several rival clubs are believed to be monitoring Staines’ situation, with the Dolphins and Dragons among those linked with interest. However, the Forbes-born flyer insists his priority is staying in Sydney.
> “Sydney’s home for me and my family, and I’d love to stay here if the opportunity’s right,” he said. “But this is footy, and sometimes things change quickly.”
Staines has made 12 appearances for the Tigers this season, scoring five tries and averaging 125 metres per game. With six rounds remaining, his performances could yet prove decisive — both for the Tigers’ rebuilding efforts and his own professional future.
