Justin Fields, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback, has candidly expressed his disappointment with his performance, acknowledging that he hasn’t played at a level sufficient to secure the starting position over veteran Russell Wilson. Despite leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record during Wilson’s absence due to a calf injury, Fields remarked, “I don’t think I played good enough, if I’m being real with you.”
Fields joined the Steelers after a trade from the Chicago Bears, where he spent the initial three seasons of his career. The Bears, holding the No. 1 draft pick, signaled a probable end to Fields’ tenure, leading to his move to Pittsburgh. Reflecting on his transition, Fields expressed gratitude, stating, “I’m just glad I was able to end up here.”
During his stint as the starter, Fields showcased dual-threat capabilities, accounting for ten touchdowns—five passing and five rushing—while maintaining a low turnover rate with just one interception and two fumbles. However, his accuracy declined in recent games, prompting head coach Mike Tomlin to consider reinstating Wilson. Tomlin noted that while Fields and the team have been “really good at times,” it was “not to be confused with great.”
The potential quarterback change has reportedly caused a divide within the organization. According to NFL insider Albert Breer, many within the team believe Fields has demonstrated significant growth and effectiveness, leading to differing opinions on who should helm the offense moving forward.
Fields’ self-critical perspective and team-first attitude have been evident throughout this period. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the team in any capacity, stating, “I’m just going to do my job. And whether that’s playing, it’s helping the guys out on the sideline, telling them what I see (or) helping Russ out if he’s out there.”
As the Steelers navigate this pivotal decision, the focus remains on optimizing team performance. With both quarterbacks potentially entering free agency next spring, the choices made in the coming weeks will likely influence the franchise’s direction and stability at the quarterback position.
