Tragic Loss for Texas A&M Community: Remembering Chance Gibson

The Texas A&M University community is mourning the untimely passing of freshman student-athlete Chance Gibson, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on Saturday, December 18, 2021.

Gibson, an 18-year-old from The Woodlands, Texas, was a dedicated member of the Aggies’ cross country and track and field teams. During his first semester at Texas A&M, he competed in events such as the Aggie Opener 5K and the Texas A&M Invitational 8K.

The accident occurred as Gibson was driving home for the holidays. Reports indicate that his vehicle hydroplaned, leading to the fatal crash. The news has left teammates, coaches, and the broader Aggie community in deep sorrow.

“Words cannot express the loss of Chance,” said Texas A&M head track coach Pat Henry. “Chance was a great young person with a bright future. He will be missed by everyone that came in contact with him.”

Teammates remember Gibson as a selfless individual who always prioritized others. “He would do anything for anyone,” said Joseph Benn, a sophomore track athlete at Texas A&M. “He was so selfless and would always put the team first.”

Gibson’s high school coach, Juris Green, highlighted his mentorship qualities: “He was one of those kids who genuinely cared about the athletes around him.”

In honor of Gibson’s memory, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support his family, quickly surpassing its initial goal, reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him.

The Texas A&M community continues to grieve the loss of a promising young athlete whose legacy of kindness and dedication will not be forgotten.
