Alistair Johnston’s transition to Celtic FC in January 2023 was marked by significant challenges that tested his adaptability and resilience. Joining from CF Montreal, the Canadian international was thrust into a demanding environment, both in terms of the club’s high expectations and the tactical nuances of his new role.
One of the primary hurdles Johnston faced was adapting to the inverted full-back position, a role integral to then-manager Ange Postecoglou’s system. This position required him to operate not only along the flanks but also to drift into central midfield areas, demanding a blend of defensive solidity and midfield creativity. Reflecting on this period, Johnston acknowledged the difficulties: “As well as people in the outside world think it’s gone, there have still been difficulties and struggles in the system.”
The mid-season move compounded these challenges. Unlike typical transfers that occur during the off-season, Johnston had to integrate into a new team dynamic amidst ongoing competitions. He noted, “The manager told me the first six months would be difficult, a new system and a completely different way to play the position.”
Despite these obstacles, Johnston’s commitment to his craft and the support from his teammates facilitated his adaptation. He expressed gratitude towards fellow full-backs Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor, stating, “Tony, Greg, all these guys, have shown me the ropes. They’ve helped make the transition as easy as possible.”
The departure of Postecoglou and the subsequent appointment of Brendan Rodgers introduced another layer of complexity. However, Johnston viewed this managerial change as an opportunity for growth. He remarked, “Since Brendan’s come in, I think he’s elevated me to another level altogether.”
Johnston’s perseverance bore fruit as he became an integral part of Celtic’s treble-winning campaign, securing the Premiership, Scottish Cup, and League Cup titles. His impressive performances did not go unnoticed, leading to a new five-year contract with the club in October 2024. Upon signing, Johnston expressed his delight, stating, “I’m delighted to continue my journey with Celtic and I’m looking forward to helping the team achieve more success.”
In retrospect, while Johnston’s early days at Celtic were fraught with challenges, his determination and the support from the club’s management and players enabled him to overcome these obstacles. His journey underscores the importance of resilience and adaptability in professional football, turning potential career setbacks into a narrative of success and growth.
