Revealed: Why McLaren made a surprise phone call to Max Verstappen camp…read more

In a move that stirred the Formula 1 paddock, McLaren CEO Zak Brown confirmed he initiated a phone call to Max Verstappen’s management earlier this year, sparking widespread speculation about the team’s driver lineup intentions.

The call, made to Verstappen’s manager Raymond Vermeulen, was described by Brown as a routine part of his role in monitoring the driver market. At the time, McLaren was in negotiations to extend Oscar Piastri’s contract, and Brown sought to assess potential shifts in the driver landscape that could impact his team’s plans. He explained, “I want to be able to assess whether any stone could start falling over, causing a domino effect. Because that could trigger interest in my driver again. That is the reason I inquired” .

Verstappen, under contract with Red Bull until 2028, acknowledged the contact but indicated the discussion was brief. He remarked, “Yes, but I think that didn’t last long. When he knew how much he would have to pay, it was over immediately” .

Despite securing long-term deals with both Piastri and Lando Norris, McLaren’s outreach to Verstappen’s camp underscores the team’s proactive approach in a dynamic driver market. Brown emphasized the importance of staying informed, stating, “It is up to me to explore the market to know what is going on” .

This episode highlights the intricate strategies teams employ in managing their driver rosters, ensuring readiness for any potential shifts in the competitive landscape.
