Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has solidified his future with the Aggies by signing a four-year contract extension, reaffirming his commitment to the program under head coach Mike Elko. This decision follows a breakout 2024 season where Reed emerged as a dynamic leader and playmaker for the team.
A Breakout Season
Reed’s ascent began when he stepped in for an injured Conner Weigman during the SEC opener against Florida. He led the Aggies to three consecutive victories, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities. His performance against LSU was particularly notable; entering the game in the third quarter, Reed rushed for three touchdowns, turning a deficit into a 38-23 win. This feat earned him the SEC Freshman of the Week honor for the second time in the season .
Over the season, Reed completed 61% of his passes for 1,572 yards and 12 touchdowns, while also rushing for 501 yards and six scores. His leadership and on-field performance have positioned him as a central figure in the Aggies’ offense moving forward .
Commitment to the Program
Despite opportunities to transfer, Reed chose to remain with Texas A&M, citing confidence in the coaching staff and the direction of the program. “I never had any intention to transfer anywhere,” Reed stated, emphasizing his belief in the team’s future under Coach Elko and offensive coordinator Collin Klein .
Looking Ahead
With the departure of Weigman and the addition of veteran QB Jacob Zeno, Reed is poised to lead the Aggies into the 2025 season. His focus during the offseason will be on physical development and building chemistry with new offensive weapons, including five-star wide receiver Jerome Myles and transfer Micah Hudson .
Reed’s commitment and performance have not only secured his role as the team’s starting quarterback but have also made him a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. As he continues to develop, the Aggies look to him to guide them to greater success in the coming seasons.
