The Dallas Mavericks bungled in the offseason by choosing to sign “Klay Thompson” over the former champion.

By choosing to sign Klay Thompson over a past champion they tested out, the Dallas Mavericks could have made a mistake in the offseason.

Perhaps no team has performed better than the Dallas Mavericks over the last three weeks of the regular season. The Mavs have soared up the Western Conference standings during that time, winning 11 of their last 12 games. They are now within shouting distance of the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder and tied for second place (in the loss column). However, Klay Thompson, the team’s highly valued summer acquisition, is still having trouble even if the squad as a whole has started to play better.

Klay hasn’t exactly been a poor player this season, but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations that came with being such a huge offseason acquisition. He is scoring 13 points on average this season while shooting 39% from the field and 36% from three-point range. You can’t help but question if the Mavs made a mistake by putting all of their money into Klay given how inconsistent he’s been this season, especially in light of the reports that the franchise did consider signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Klay Thompson’s struggles
The squad ultimately chose Klay, but it might have been a bad choice. KCP is thirty-one and Klay is thirty-four.

Of course, everything will be forgotten if Klay can find a way to get past this difficult start to the season. It doesn’t matter if Klay has a poor regular season; what matters is that he performs well for the Mavs in the postseason. Instead of signing Klay for the regular season, the Mavs signed him for the playoffs. Only then can we make a fair assessment on Klay’s move. It’s still too early to draw any judgments about this decision, regardless of how bad the early indications are.

Although the entire decision regarding this move is still up in the air, it wouldn’t be shocking if there was some second-guessing at this stage.
