After losing to the Cincinnati Bengals 27–20 on Monday night, the Dallas Cowboys’ aspirations of making the playoffs were severely damaged. The loss was humiliating in addition to being unpleasant. Team owner Jerry Jones was noticeably irritated in his suite following a costly fourth-quarter error, which resulted in a fight with Cowboys special teams coach John Fassel after the game.

The Cowboys made a crucial play with two minutes left in the game by stopping a Bengals punt, which put them in position for a drive that may win the game. However, cornerback Amani Oruwariye handled the recovery poorly rather than taking advantage of the opportunity.

The game-winning touchdown was scored by quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase a few plays after the Bengals reclaimed possession.

Jerry Jones was not pleased by the startling error.

NFL reporter Ed Werder claims that as soon as Jones walked into the locker room following the game, he approached Fassel. Although Jones talking with coaches after a game is not unusual, Fassel admitted that this exchange was unique.

“Cowboys ST John Fassel said owner Jerry Jones engaged him about the blocked punt and subsequent mistake by Amani Oruwariye almost as soon as he entered the locker room,” Werder wrote.

“Fassel said it wasn’t the first time but wouldn’t describe such a conversation as a normal occurrence.”

Fassel discusses the issue.
In addition to accepting responsibility for the error, special teams coordinator John Fassel provided insight into Oruwariye’s thoughts throughout the play.

“[Oruwariye] said that he heard the crowd, which was significant, so he turned back to see what happened and the ball was bouncing at him,” Fassel added. “He was unaware that it had been blocked. He was unaware that the ball was where it was and was unsure if it was a fumble. He simply responded like I would, saying, “See ball, get ball.”
