Esteban Ocon could be heading for an unexpected new chapter in Formula 1, with reports linking the departing Haas driver to Aston Martin as a reserve driver for the 2027 season.
The Frenchman is facing an uncertain future after Haas confirmed that he would leave the team at the end of 2026. With most of the available full-time seats already occupied, a reserve role increasingly appears to be his route to remaining in the championship.
According to a report attributed to Autosport, Aston Martin could provide that opportunity, potentially bringing Ocon back together with Fernando Alonso, his former Alpine teammate. However, the reported move has not yet been officially confirmed by Aston Martin or Ocon.
HAAS EXIT LEAVES OCON FACING A DIFFERENT F1 FUTURE
Ocon’s departure from Haas marks another significant turning point in a career that has included spells with Manor, Force India, Renault, Alpine and the American outfit.
The 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix winner has repeatedly made it clear that he wants to remain in Formula 1. He has also acknowledged that accepting a reserve or third-driver position would be preferable to leaving the championship altogether.
That willingness could make Aston Martin an attractive destination, particularly if the team believes his experience would strengthen its driver support structure.
A POSSIBLE REUNION WITH FERNANDO ALONSO
One of the most interesting aspects of the reported move is the possibility of Ocon working alongside Alonso again.
The pair previously raced together at Alpine, sharing two seasons as teammates. Their relationship attracted considerable attention during that period, particularly when competitive tensions emerged on track.
A reunion at Aston Martin would place both drivers in the same organisation under very different circumstances. Rather than competing for the same race seat, Ocon could provide experience and support while remaining available if the team needs a replacement.
WHY ASTON MARTIN COULD BENEFIT FROM OCON
Ocon brings something that cannot easily be measured by his latest championship position: extensive Formula 1 experience.
He has competed across multiple teams, won a Grand Prix and worked with different technical structures. For a team looking to strengthen its options for 2027, that background could be valuable.
A reserve driver is not simply someone waiting for another driver to become unavailable. The role can involve simulator work, technical feedback, development support and preparation for possible race appearances.
OCON’S FORMULA 1 CAREER MAY NOT BE OVER
Ocon has previously experienced life away from the starting grid. He served as Mercedes’ reserve driver in 2019 before returning to a full-time seat with Renault in 2020.
That history offers a reminder that a reserve position does not necessarily mean the end of a racing career.
If the Aston Martin reports prove accurate, Ocon could be positioning himself for another opportunity to return to the grid. For now, however, the reported 2027 move remains unconfirmed, and his immediate priority is dealing with the difficult end to his Haas chapter.
