Olivia Miles’ unforgettable rookie season has ended in dramatic fashion, with the Minnesota Lynx guard now facing a financial penalty from the WNBA following a controversial moment in their playoff elimination against the New York Liberty. Miles was assessed a Flagrant 1 foul after making contact with Breanna Stewart’s face during Game 2, adding another difficult moment to a night in which Minnesota’s season came crashing down. The reported fine for the infraction is $500 under the league’s flagrant-foul penalty structure.
The incident occurred with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter as Stewart attacked the basket. Miles attempted to challenge the play but made contact with Stewart’s face, leaving the Liberty star on the floor briefly. Officials ruled the contact a Flagrant 1, and Miles was subsequently removed from the game. She did not return for the fourth quarter, meaning the Rookie of the Year was watching from the sidelines as Minnesota attempted to save its season.
The disappointment was even greater because Miles had just completed one of the most impressive rookie campaigns in WNBA history. She was unanimously named the 2026 Rookie of the Year after receiving all 74 votes from the league’s national panel, averaging 19.8 points, 6.0 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. Miles managed only five points in nearly 17 minutes in the decisive game and was unable to provide the offensive spark Minnesota needed. The result produced a historic outcome, as the No. 8-seeded Liberty became the first eighth seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in WNBA playoff history.
For Miles, the $500 fine will be a relatively small footnote compared with the painful lessons of her first postseason. Her regular-season achievements established her as one of the league’s most exciting young stars, but the abrupt playoff exit exposed the different pressures that come with postseason basketball.
