BREAKING: Kliff Kingsbury Stuns the Football World with Game-Changing $15 Million Donation to Texas Tech Red Raiders Football Program, Honoring the Coaches and Teammates Who Paved His Path to College Football Stardom

In a stunning and emotional announcement that sent shockwaves through the college football world, former Texas Tech quarterback and NFL head coach Kliff Kingsbury has pledged a transformative $15 million donation to the Texas Tech Red Raiders football program. The historic gift not only marks one of the largest contributions ever made by a former player but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to the mentors and teammates who helped shape Kingsbury’s storied journey from small-town standout to college football legend.

Speaking at a surprise press conference held at Jones AT&T Stadium, Kingsbury fought back tears as he shared the motivation behind his generous donation.

“Texas Tech gave me everything,” Kingsbury said. “It gave me a chance when nobody else would. It gave me coaches who believed in me, teammates who fought beside me, and a fan base that supported me every step of the way. This is my way of saying thank you and helping ensure the next generation has the same chance I did.”

The $15 million donation will be used to fund a state-of-the-art training facility, enhanced academic support services for student-athletes, and expanded mental health resources—areas Kingsbury specifically requested to support. Additionally, a portion of the funds will establish the “Red Raider Brotherhood Endowment,” a scholarship program named in honor of the 2002 Texas Tech football team, with which Kingsbury closed his collegiate career in record-setting fashion.

Current Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire praised Kingsbury’s gesture, calling it “a powerful reminder of what it means to be a Red Raider.”

“Kliff’s generosity and humility are what make him one of the all-time greats—not just on the field, but off of it,” McGuire said. “This gift will change lives and programs for decades to come.”

Kingsbury’s rise to fame began under the legendary Mike Leach, who coached him during his record-breaking career at Texas Tech from 1999 to 2002. After a brief NFL career and successful coaching stints—including as head coach at Texas Tech and in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals—Kingsbury has remained a beloved figure in Lubbock and across college football.

Many former teammates also reacted emotionally to the news. Wes Welker, a fellow Texas Tech great and longtime friend, posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it. Kliff, you’ve always been about lifting others up. Today, you just lifted all of Red Raider Nation.”

The announcement comes at a time when college football is undergoing massive changes, including the growing influence of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals, conference realignments, and expanded playoff formats. Kingsbury’s gift stands out as a nostalgic yet forward-looking investment—one that emphasizes tradition, loyalty, and the pure love of the game.

For Red Raider fans, it’s a day to celebrate one of their own, not just for what he achieved in a Texas Tech uniform, but for how he continues to give back with a full heart.

“We win as a team, and we rise as a team,” Kingsbury said in closing. “This isn’t about me. This is about everyone who ever wore the scarlet and black.”
