As the 2025 college football season approaches, Joey McGuire is set to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders into a new chapter, building upon a foundation of consistent success and strategic enhancements.
A Promising Start and Continued Growth
Since taking the helm in November 2021, McGuire has revitalized the Red Raiders, steering them to three consecutive bowl appearances and achieving a 23–16 record over his first three seasons. Notably, Texas Tech has maintained a winning record in Big 12 play each year under his leadership, a feat unmatched in recent program history.
Recognizing his impact, Texas Tech extended McGuire’s contract in 2023, securing his leadership through the 2028 season with a six-year, $26.6 million agreement. His performance also earned him a spot on the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list in 2024.
Strategic Coaching Changes for 2025
To address challenges from the previous season, McGuire has overhauled his coordinator staff. Mack Leftwich, formerly of Texas State, joins as offensive coordinator, bringing a balanced offensive approach that averaged 476.9 total yards per game in 2024. On defense, Shiel Wood steps in after leading a top-performing unit at Houston, aiming to strengthen a defense that struggled against the pass last season.
Talent Acquisition and Player Development
McGuire’s commitment to recruiting is evident in Texas Tech’s top-ranked transfer portal class following the 2024 season. Key additions include defensive backs Cole Wisniewski, Tarrian Grant, and Brice Pollock, bolstering a secondary that ranked 132nd nationally against the pass. Returning standouts like linebackers Jacob Rodriguez and Ben Roberts, along with EDGE rushers Charles Esters III and Terrell Tilmon, provide a solid foundation for the revamped defense.
Embracing Innovation and Legacy
Looking ahead, Texas Tech plans to become the first program to exclusively wear the Patrick Mahomes II logo on their uniforms starting in 2026, replacing the traditional Adidas branding. This partnership, influenced by the former Red Raider quarterback, signifies a blend of tradition and modern branding.
The Road Ahead
The Red Raiders will kick off the 2025 season with three home games: against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on August 30, Kent State on September 6, and Oregon State on September 13, before opening Big 12 play on the road against Utah on September 20.
With strategic coaching hires, a strong recruiting class, and a commitment to innovation, Joey McGuire positions Texas Tech as a formidable contender in the Big 12, aiming to elevate the program to new heights in the 2025 season and beyond.
