RED BULL SHUTS DOWN LIAM LAWSON EXIT RUMOURS AS NIKOLA TSOLOV SPECULATION INTENSIFIES

Liam Lawson’s Formula 1 future has once again become the center of attention after fresh speculation suggested Racing Bulls could replace him with Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov for the 2027 season. However, the team’s leadership has now delivered its clearest response yet, dismissing the reports and insisting there are currently no plans to make a driver change.

While rumours continue to swirl around Red Bull’s driver academy, Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane has publicly backed Lawson, making it clear that the New Zealander remains an important part of the team’s plans. Even so, the story highlights just how fiercely competitive Red Bull’s junior programme has become, where every promising youngster creates fresh pressure on those already occupying Formula 1 seats.

RUMOURS EMERGE OVER LAWSON’S FUTURE

The speculation began after reports claimed Red Bull was preparing to secure a Racing Bulls seat for Bulgarian Formula 2 standout Nikola Tsolov in 2027.

Tsolov has enjoyed an impressive campaign in Formula 2, collecting multiple victories and establishing himself as one of the championship’s leading title contenders. At just 19 years old, he has become one of Red Bull’s brightest academy prospects, prompting suggestions that Formula 1 could soon be his next destination.

If such a promotion were to happen, questions naturally emerged over who would make way. Lawson’s name quickly became the focus of those discussions, largely because Racing Bulls already has a growing list of highly rated young drivers within Red Bull’s system.

RACING BULLS ISSUES A STRONG RESPONSE

Rather than allowing the rumours to grow, Racing Bulls boss Alan Permane addressed the situation directly during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

Permane emphasized that both Lawson and teammate Isack Hadjar are delivering exactly what the team expects.

He explained that both drivers continue to work hard, remain focused, and consistently perform on track.

When asked directly whether reports linking Tsolov to Lawson’s seat had any truth, Permane left little room for interpretation.

According to the team principal, the reports are simply rumours, and Racing Bulls has not even discussed replacing either of its current drivers.

His comments represent the strongest public endorsement Lawson has received since the speculation surfaced.

NIKOLA TSOLOV IS STILL BUILDING HIS CASE

Although Racing Bulls rejected suggestions of an imminent promotion, Permane also acknowledged that Tsolov is attracting attention for all the right reasons.

The Bulgarian remains part of Red Bull’s junior programme and has produced impressive performances throughout the current Formula 2 season.

However, there remains one important obstacle before any Formula 1 promotion becomes possible.

Tsolov has not yet secured the FIA Super Licence points required to compete in Formula 1. Until those requirements are met, he cannot even participate in official Formula 1 practice sessions.

That explains why Japanese driver Ayumu Iwasa, who already possesses the necessary credentials, stepped into Lawson’s car during the mandatory rookie FP1 session at the Austrian Grand Prix instead.

LAWSON HAS ALREADY SURVIVED A DIFFICULT CAREER PATH

Few current Formula 1 drivers have experienced a journey as unpredictable as Lawson’s.

After making his debut as Daniel Ricciardo’s injury replacement in 2023, Lawson earned a permanent Racing Bulls drive before receiving an unexpected promotion to Red Bull’s senior team following Sergio Perez’s departure.

That opportunity, however, proved brutally short-lived. Lawson was demoted after only two race weekends, returning to Racing Bulls before rebuilding his reputation throughout the remainder of the season.

Instead of allowing that setback to define him, the New Zealander responded with maturity and consistent performances that convinced Red Bull to retain him for 2026.

His current campaign has further strengthened his case.

HIS RESULTS ARE SPEAKING FOR THEMSELVES

Lawson has quietly become one of Racing Bulls’ most reliable performers this season.

His points haul has kept the team firmly involved in the battle for fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, proving that he can consistently deliver under pressure.

Perhaps more importantly, he has shown resilience after one of the toughest experiences any young Formula 1 driver can face—being promoted and demoted by Red Bull within the space of a few races.

That mental strength should not be underestimated.

For a team that values adaptability and composure, Lawson continues to demonstrate qualities that statistics alone cannot measure.

RED BULL’S DRIVER PIPELINE CREATES CONSTANT PRESSURE

One reason rumours like these emerge so frequently is the extraordinary depth of Red Bull’s junior programme.

Every season produces another highly rated prospect ready to challenge for a Formula 1 opportunity.

Alongside Tsolov, Red Bull also continues to monitor several promising young talents progressing through Formula 2 and Formula 3.

This relentless production line has helped Red Bull discover multiple Grand Prix winners and world champions over the years, but it also creates enormous pressure on drivers already occupying seats.

Unlike several rival teams that often keep the same line-up for years, Red Bull has built its reputation on making difficult decisions whenever it believes another driver offers greater long-term potential.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR LAWSON’S FUTURE

For now, Lawson’s position appears secure.

Racing Bulls’ leadership has publicly denied that any discussions about replacing him have taken place, and his performances this season support that confidence.

However, Formula 1 is a results-driven sport, and nowhere is that reality more evident than within Red Bull’s organisation.

Should Tsolov continue winning in Formula 2 while Lawson’s performances decline, the conversation could quickly change.

Equally, if Lawson maintains his current consistency, he may strengthen his claim not only to remain at Racing Bulls but potentially position himself for another opportunity higher up the Red Bull ladder should circumstances change.

With Red Bull’s driver market constantly evolving, today’s public backing provides Lawson with welcome stability—but in Formula 1, every race weekend remains another audition for the future.
