As of January 13, 2025, the Pittsburgh Steelers are not planning to make any changes involving head coach Mike Tomlin, despite a disappointing end to the season. The team concluded with a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round, following a four-game losing streak to close the regular season. Tomlin, who signed a three-year extension before the season, is under contract until 2027. He is the longest-tenured coach in the NFL, with a regular-season record of 183-107-2 and a playoff record of 8-11.
Despite some public outcry and speculation about his future, the Steelers’ organization has expressed confidence in Tomlin’s leadership. Team sources indicate that no moves involving Tomlin are planned, even after the team’s early postseason exit.
However, discussions and opinions about potential replacements have emerged. Former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown has called for Tomlin’s departure, suggesting Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman as a successor. Freeman, notable for leading his team to the College Football Playoff National Championship game, has a coaching record of 34-9. Despite this endorsement, Freeman has recently indicated plans to remain with Notre Dame, mentioning an upcoming contract extension.
Additionally, some analysts have proposed other potential candidates if a coaching change were to occur. Names like Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh have been mentioned as possible successors.
It’s important to note that these discussions are speculative, and the Steelers have not indicated any intention to replace Mike Tomlin at this time. The organization appears committed to continuing under his leadership for the foreseeable future.
