Leeds United has been dealt a significant blow with the news that captain Ethan Ampadu will be sidelined until at least January 2025 due to a serious knee injury. The 24-year-old Welsh international sustained lateral ligament damage during the first half of the match against Coventry City on September 28, 2024. Following medical evaluations, it was determined that Ampadu would not require surgery; however, a conservative treatment approach has been recommended, necessitating a recovery period of approximately 10 weeks.
Since joining Leeds in the summer of 2023, Ampadu has been instrumental in the team’s midfield, making 53 starts in the Championship and eight additional appearances in other competitions. His versatility, operating both as a centre-back and central midfielder, has been pivotal to head coach Daniel Farke’s tactical setups. Farke commented on the injury, stating, “It’s difficult to predict how long he will be out, but it’s realistic to speak about 10 weeks until he can return to team training.”
The timing of Ampadu’s injury is particularly challenging for Leeds, as fellow midfielder Ilia Gruev has also been ruled out until January due to a groin injury that required surgery. Gruev’s absence further depletes the team’s midfield options, leaving Farke with limited choices in this crucial area.
In response to these setbacks, Leeds explored the free-agent market to bolster their squad. The club pursued former West Ham and Nottingham Forest midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate; however, the deal collapsed after medical examinations revealed fitness concerns that would delay his availability for several weeks. Subsequently, Leeds extended a trial to ex-Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin, who has been without a club since leaving Villarreal. Coquelin’s experience could provide the necessary depth and leadership in midfield during this injury crisis.
Despite these challenges, Leeds remains competitive in the Championship, currently sitting in fifth place and aiming for promotion to the Premier League. The upcoming fixtures will test the squad’s resilience, particularly with matches against top-tier opponents like Sheffield United on the horizon. Farke may need to adjust his tactical approach, possibly altering formations or relying on less experienced players to fill the void left by Ampadu and Gruev.
The club and its supporters are hopeful for Ampadu’s swift recovery, with expectations for his return to training in December and match play in January. His leadership and versatility will be crucial as Leeds continues its pursuit of promotion in the latter half of the season.
