Latest Finney-Smith trade rumor should send the Mavericks running the other way.

Since Dorian Finney-Smith was traded to the Brooklyn Nets by the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 as part of the Kyrie Irving trade, the two teams have frequently been mentioned together. Although fans who want Finney-Smith to return to Big D are the main source of this conversation, there has also been some reporting regarding a possible return that goes back to last season.

Prior to the new year, Dallas allegedly expressed interest in dealing for Finney-Smith, and it’s obvious that he hopes to make a comeback eventually. He and his family have benefited much from the Mavericks organization, and after it was revealed that clubs were making offers for him in the second round this season, it appeared that a comeback would be more feasible.

Although supporters would be thrilled if Dallas could sign Finney-Smith for less than a first-round pick, the Mavs could be better off staying away after a recent update from NBA expert Marc Stein.

Stein claims that Finney-Smith (subscription required) is being offered by the Nets for “at least one first-round pick.” This season, Brooklyn has maintained its high asking price strategy for Finney-Smith, and with good reason—he is shooting a career-best 43.2 percent from three-point range and averaging 10.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 0.9 steals per game.

Washington’s significance appears to increase with each game, and Dallas is 1-5 without him this season. He plays excellent defense, and his steadily getting better jump shot, together with his development as a facilitator and ball handler, have made him one of the team’s most vital players.

Every night, the Mavs rely heavily on him for defense and rebounding, so it would be great to have someone who can step in when he is not on the court. It’s unclear if it will be Finney-Smith, but if the Mavs can manage to get him without forfeiting a first-round choice, they should be all set.
